Is it safe for me to remove an expansion tank?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.25 PM
Hi, I am currently removing a kitchen and there's a small red expansion tank next to the boiler, resting on top of the kitchen wall units I need to remove. Can I simply unscrew this myself? Is it pressurised? My plan was to just remove it, fit a push-fit stop end to temporarily cap it off until the plumber comes to fit the new boiler. Any answers/advice greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

It will be pressurised. You'd have to empty the system via a drain off valve on the radiators. Only enough to remove the pressure and stop the water gushing out the top.
If the pressure valve is the highest point of the heating system then a couple of little will be enough to stop you getting wet. If it isn't, you'll need to drain the whole system

Hi
There will be pressure within the heating system so you will need to drain down to carry out any work. It's also not a good idea to run the heating system without the vessel as the pressure within the system will increase and discharge outside which will leave your customer without heating.
Thanks
