Tiling

What is the best way to get old grout and adhesive off of floorboards.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.06 PM

The old tiles were laid straight onto the floorboards which is probably why they all cracked or became loose. Any help would be appreciated as the old adhesive is like cement!

Hi Sue, You might be best just to remove all the floorboards and replace with 18mm ply. This may take a similar amount of time and at least you know that your subfloor will be sound. You could also install a crack suppression matting on top of this for full peace of mind (ditra of durabase matting).

Hi Sue The best bet may be to smooth off the adhesive as much as you can, and then put thin cement boards over the top (Hardibacker 6mm), to give you a nice smooth finish, so that you can tile on top. You can screw and glue the cement boards down so they are level, and solid. It may be easier than trying to get the old adhesive off! Good luck, Regards, Tiel
