I have an old artex ceiling in my lounge that has bowed and collapsed in one corner

Anonymous user 03/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

Due to old water damage one corner has come away from the wall and is bowing and another corner has done the same but not so bad due to a leaking shower tray. If I removed the coving can I put boards over the old ceiling to completely cover it all and then recove? If so what boards do I need to buy and how would I fix them to the old ceiling. Also when it come to finishing I don't want to artex it again but wouldn't mind some sort of textured paint. What paint would be best to achieve a nice even textured finish? Thanks in advance for any help you could provide me

hi the usual proceedure is to remove completely the old ceiling and coving and replace with new. this is best for two reasons; 1. you can guarantee good fixings for the new boards and 2. you can check for any water damage to the joists. you should use 12mm tapered edge boards the have the boards skimmed. this should be done by a professional as it is a difficult job. then have the coving redone, this supports the edge of the ceiling and also hides any poor joins between the walls and ceiling. slowold42

Same as bk has said, but if you go down the route of removing the ceiling, get it tested for asbestos. Another option is to overboard the ceiling, after taking the coving down, find all your joists and mark them, use long enough screws to go through and into ceiling joist. Have it a plastered then fit new coving if required.

There is no need to take the hole ceiling down unless really bad last resort!! If you have a big ceiling it can be very costly and unnecessary take down we’re the leak is inspect for rot then board the hole ceiling it really is a job for professional plasterers ! Even for us that have been doing it for years it’s hard work and needs doing right !!! Pooleplastering

One thing we have learnt is never cover over a problem as it will be hiding something or come back to bight you in the rear. If your going to do something do it right and then its only done once. as the other guys say. strip it all out and check the timbers for signs of rot/mould etc. how old are the ceiling boards? make sure they are not asbestos if old. there are various brands of paint that give a textured finish, go to a paint shop and speak to a member of staff so they can direct you in the correct way.
