Loft Conversion

Best Way to Clean / Clear / Prep Attic for new Insulation

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

Just bought a 1930's semi detached, the loft hatch is small but enough for me to get in and I have a look. Looks like no one has been up in 20-30 years, there is dirt EVERYWHERE and it looks like it could do with a proper gutting and new insulation laying down. How can I do this effectively without causing a massive mess in our newly decorated house? I have face mask and googles ready! Maybe some sort of plastic chute from the opening into a sealed bag below on the landing? Also - if the original insulation is only 100mm or so, is it worth replacing this with new or just putting another thicker layer on top? Does insulation degrade in performance if it has been there for years and years and is filled with dirt??

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi You will defo need a mask and goggles!. The insulation that is up there will be the incredibly itchy stuff that will make you itch for days so I would recommend wearing a disposable coveralls you can bin after each use Also be careful and on the look out for asbestos which may have been used to lag water pipes. Its harmless if untouched and not rubbed/brushed against. Look online for asbestos lagging pictures to find what you may be looking for. Insulation works by trapping the air inside it so if it is full of dirt it will not be very efficient however something is better then nothing and most people add a top layer on. Local trade places often do an offer of 3 for 2 at this time of the year As for the removal I would try to bag everything up in the loft and pass it out through the hatch as if you use a chute you may end up with dust in the hall/landing Good luck!
