Removing a 4'x3' area of bricks from an internal wall.

Hi, I want to take an area of bricks out and replace with glass blocks. The wall is load bearing as far as I can tell (joists run across it and there is a wall directly above dividing bedrooms). The house is early 20th C build. Would an RSJ need to be fitted as a lintel across the 4' wide area?

Yes. A steel beam is required to support load from above.
To do this you must cover the span of which you are taking out by wooden planks the opposite way that the joists are going supported by acro props.
Once this is secure you can now take out the bricks you need. Your steel beam must be housed into the brick work either side by at least 150 - 200mm beaded into cement and packed up with slate if needed to level.
Hope this helps
