Central Heating

Thimble screws no water coming out. No heating. Hot water seems ok.

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.24 PM

Guys I have a Open vented central heating and hot water system. F & E tank in the loft. Hot water storage cylinder in airing cupboard upstairs Boiler downstairs (by ceiling) Had to drain down the system to the boiler return drain point. So everything above that point would not have any water in it (or very little anyway). Filled up the system very slowly form the F & E tank in the loft. Before switching on system. Bled air from radiators downstairs. Bled air from radiators upstairs. Bled air from pump by undoing the screw in the centre of the pump. Tried to bleed air form the 2 thimble screws above & near the pump & the 3-port valve in the airing cupboard; they are next to the hot water tank. But no water came out of them. Was only turning the thimble screw about ½ turn. Started the system. Hot water seems to be working ok. Central heating system won't come? Any thoughts. Thanks PS - if the rubber seal is perished, is it possible to just replace the rubber seal, by getting a standard rubber washer and trimming it down to size?

air lock, thumb vents are blocked, when you drain systems down you dislodge sludge which will rise with water as you fill system and block small air vents, these vents have a small rubber washer in them it may be stuck over air vent outlet hole you will have to carefully unscrew cap untill air and water come out or untill the cap is off to check if rubber is stuck, you would be best to drain system bellow thumb vents to check this if rubber not stuck get a needle or thin piece of wire push it into hole to clear any blockage refit thumb vents and refill system, dont forget to add corrosion proof fluid.

I think if you are getting hot water in-direct (cylinder heated by the boiler) then the mid-position or zone valve will probably be the cause for no heating
