Frequent sewage smells in top floor flat bathroom

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.24 PM

Hi, For the past few months I have regularly had foul sewage-y type smells in my main bathroom. It can happen at any time, regardless of whether or not the bathroom (either the bath, shower, toilet or sink) has been used recently and lasts between 5 - 30 minutes. I can't tell for sure where it is coming from and the nearby ensuite is not affected at all. I live on the top (3rd) floor of a modern flat (8 years old) and had new bathroom floor tiles put down in the summer which required the toilet to be removed then replaced. Could it be possible that the pipes, etc weren't properly connected/sealed when it was replaced? I'm fairly certain that the smell started after the floor was put down. I have used drain unblockers regularly in the bath and sink and tried to mask it with sprays, etc but it is just not disappearing. Any ideas? I do have a factor but I think they will only cover maintenance if it affects the whole building, not just my personal flat. Thanks in advance.

check seal on pan connection if it is plastic type rubber may have pushed in,also check trap on bath and basin are working properly, when you empty basin or bath do you get a gurgeling sound, if so your traps are syphoning out, this is due to incorrect plumbing design,if it is the traps your cheapest option is to fit anti-syphon traps.
