Purpose of electrical certificate/how to get comeback on shoddy work

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.06 PM

Recently we bought and moved into our new home. The other day we had a leak and when I finally found it noticed that the electrical cables for the kitchen run alongside the water pipes! On further investigation we also found some shoddy work that leads into the extension. A plug behind the waste pipe for the washing machine wedged in with all sorts of left over wood. I have EICR certificates for the work for both. The kitchen was done as part of a rewire ten years ago and the extension three years. I was wondering how much weight the EICR certificates carry in getting this sorted? Who do I see or report this too and what are my next steps? Thanks

If you had got an EICR done on the property before you bought it, it would have highlighted any issues. Regardless if you had certificates or not. If the rewire was done 10 years ago then it is probably due. How do you know that some of the electrical work has not been an add on or a DIY job after the rewire. I would get an EICR done on the installation. Your edit. If you have an EICR for the work done if it was rewired you should have had an Electrical Installation Certificate for that. If the extension was done not so long ago, either a Minor works certificate or a EIC. Depending if a new circuit was installed there. The EICR DOES NOT cover new work. I suggest you get a registered electrician out to advise. Both registered and qualified.

Only comeback is through the trade body. What organisation is detailed on the certificates? Is the company NICEIC, NAPIT or Elecsa Registered? if its none of them then only re-course is via trading standards and small claims court. This problem is very common and people do not do enough checks before hiring an electrician.
