ELECTRICIANS: Do you plaster over holes and chases?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.06 PM
Just wondering what fellow electricians do when asked to carry out minor works such as socket or light switch relocation and additions, do you plaster over the chase or you inform client to call a plasterer. To clients, For a small job like those, it seems a bit awkward to spend the same if not more, to cover the mess than to relocate the socket?

Fellow electrician. Always plaster them up and include it in the quote. Unless the customer says they will get it patched up. Customer service.

We would normally advise the customer before starting the work about any damage that may be caused , then we would make good to a reasonable standard if required (ready to be sanded , filled and paited by customer or there own decorator) if not they can arrange themselves . we can make good but we are not decorators !

Totally agree with the other comments always quote on the basis that making good to a non decorative finish is included as part of the job. If declined or customer wants a cheaper job then it can be deleted and quote reduced accordingly.

Gosh, it was weird in 2016, plasterer electrician, electrician plasterer, anyone do carpeting and carpentry too? If you damage a wall, and then use filler, not muck or the like, you make the plastering null and void, or at least very hard for the plasterer to get right, so advise the customer of the predicted damage, then advise they book a plasterer/competent decorator (someone who actually knows how to get the repairs done properly - now THAT is customer service, keep those that specialise on their specialism.... Glad we've all moved on eh?

Always fill with bonding coat to just below the surface, so a plasterer / decorator can fill to a decoratable finish following on. No risk of our cables being damaged, and it just looks better and we feel morally batter about removing someones plaster in the first place.
