Do I need twant to paint a wall but it's papered, will I need it skimming?

Folks, I'm buying a house that has wallpaper everywhere but I'm a fan of plain painted walls. Will I need the walls stripped and skimmed to be able to paint a previously papered wall? Thanks

Yes ,you need to take off the paper first and then you need skimming.

Hi there,
That's a good question. Unfortunately there is no straight answer at this stage as you don't know the condition of the walls behind the paper as it tends to hide imperfections.
My advice would be to strip the wallpaper first and examine the walls that you want to paint. If the are clear of all paper and seem to be in good condition (no dents or uneven edges) then I would just go ahead and paint those ones.
If there are any that have imperfections then I would mark them in some way and only get those ones plastered.
Hope this helps and that the job goes to plan.
Kind regards

I completely agree with the other traders'.One thing I have done in the past, when all the prep is done is apply Lining paper, when painted should look. Like it been skimmed.Hence less mess, and Expensive.

I agree with the previous replies entirely, i.e. It all depends on the condition of the underlying plaster. Having said that unless your prepared for what can sometimes be hours of prep, there's nothing like a nice new wall of plaster for freshly painted walls/rooms . And over skimming does tend to flatten out any undulations and make the plastered area flatter again, especially old older properties.

You should strip off all paper completely, access what condition the walls are in.if they are in good condition, wash down walls thoroughly to remove all traces of residual paste, allow to dry, and they should be sound enough to paint.if in bad condition, make good to all defective areas, and rub down, dust off, and apply a good stout lining paper. Ie.wallrock I find is ideal for this, and then coat up with 2no coats of emulsion to finish. I hope this can help.
