Clanging and squeaking chipboard floors

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

We have bought a house which has a new extension on it. The master bedroom is above a large open plan kitchen living room. There are two steels running width ways across the room and chipboard has been laid as flooring in the master bedroom. We are experiencing some significant clanging noises as you walk through the master bedroom. The original chippy tried screwing a section of the boards rather than nailing them but this makes no difference. On lifting one section of chipboard it looks like there is a small gap (1mm) between the wooden joist and the steel at the bottom. We have just tried using some slow expanding glue in the hole but that does not seem to make any difference. All the boards have been glued together. It is not just a squeaking noise but a clanging noise from the metal steel and joist twisting we think. I just don't know how to fix it. Do you have any ideas or recommendations as to how we can diagnose and resolve the problem? The original builder doesn't have any ideas and the original chippy is now very ill so cannot help. He did wonder if the timbers had gone in a little damp and shrunk and twisted leaving gaps under the joists as you walk but didn't tell me how we could determine if this was the issue. Any advice would be much appreciated. If the gaps are just 1-2mm how do you pack them? What can you use?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The main problem seems to be that chipboard (groves) were not glued together when installed. I would say that you should try syringe and adhesive injections in the most noisy areas. If you will notice improvement, follow up with more injections to completely eliminate the noise.

I'm afraid the floor boards need to come up then the joists can be packed and levelled now that they have acclimatised to your house and then boards relaid. Sorry for giving you bad news but this is the only way to solve the problem. Hope it helps Rob
