How should a joiner sort a floor joist that is higher than the rest?
Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 2.33 PM
We are having our kitchen floor tiled before a new kitchen is put in. The kitchen company sent a joiner to remove the old kitchen and sort the uneven floor. One joist was higher than the rest. I thought he would sand it down but he has cut out most of this joist into slats and attached them with nails to the joists on either side. My worry is this joist is now missing and the floor and walls have no proper support and will the walls eventually start to crumble and will the floor give way?
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi Hen,
Usually you would either take the joist out and notch the bottom of it so it sits lower if that's possible to do. Or use an electric planer in situ to plane it down.
Not sure what he has done, sounds like he's just put noggings across in place of the joist... 'different' would be nice to see a photo.
The joist doesn't support the wall, although if he's taken it of the wall and left a hole, the hole in the wall needs filling.

You cannot just remove a joist. They are spaced at certain distances for a reason. If you are sure that he has done this then you need to either call him back or contact another carpenter or builder to come and take a look.Hampshire carpenter has already explained the normal way to solve the problem that you first had and i too, would like to see a photo!

Hi, yes the best thing to to would be to hire a Joiner to fix it for you and either they would remove and replace the joist with proper procedures if possible or cut the joist down to the correct size aslong as there is enough play for reducing the size as, if the joist size is to thin it could bow or snap. Or they could add Packers on top of the other joists to bring the floor level up to the higher joist level if possible
