Painting moulded doors but keeping wood-grain effect

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

I have just had some internal doors fitted, they are ready to paint. However, I like the wood-grain effect, and don't want to loose that by applying paint. How can I pain the doors whilst keeping the wood-grain effect? Any particular paint recommendations? Would diluting satinwood with water be effective? Thanks in advance. Thanks for the answers ... What would be the consistency of the thinner to paint? Any particular best make thinner you would recommend? Thanks

Moulded doors typically come ready to paint. I would use two coats of thinned satin wood straight onto the door with a sinthetic brush which should retain the grain. You could also try using a 'gloss' sponge roller for an even finish - again thinned.

I dont actually think you need thin any paint. You can paint these and still retain all the grain thats the idea of them being grained . Unless your pouring the paint on to a thickness that will over run the grain -im sure your not :-) then there shouldnt be any problems. PPS

1st answer: I agree with the chap above ^^^ 2nd answer: I'd say 60% paint 40% for either Water based or Oil based. You don't want it running down the door or over your hands. If you get to that point, it's too thin. • Water based paint thin with water (Read the back of tin it should say wash brushes with water) • Oil based paint thin with White Spirits • (Read the back of tin it should say wash brushes with white spirit or it will say it is flammable) Lightly sand before you start then "very light" sand between coats with well used and paper.

If you want to keep the true wood effect grain on your doors I would always recommend a spray finish to avoid unsightly brush marks, but then I'm biased :)
