Quality of repair of punctured hot water supply pipe and radiator pipe work.

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.55 PM

Hi all, I have two questions: 1. During installation of a new radiator, the tradesman accidentally drilled into the hot water pipe. Size of the damage was a 5 - 7 mm (approximately) hole on the upper part of the pipe. This was repaired using soldering the whole hole and not using anything else. At this point, it's working fine. But my question is, is this a good quality repair? Will it last? 2. One of the radiator return pipe was cut and re-joined using compression, instead of soldering. This join is below the floor board. Is this standard? Will it leak in the future? Many thanks in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

1. Cut out the damaged piece of pipe and replace with new. 2. Compression fittings are suitable as long as a jointing compound is used to provide a sound joint.

I've soldered a hole before, but just as a quick fix temp measure, to get the water back on, but don't think it's a good idea to leave long term, for one there is more than likely a massive lump of solder inside the pipe which will be restricting the flow, plus being a hot water pipe, it will constantly expand when hot then shrink when cold and because the solder sealing the hole at the minute has no support like it does when sealing a fitting, it will eventually crack and leak. I'd definitely get the bodger back! As for the compression fitting under the floor, although legal, I'd have him change that too, because undisturbed it could last for years, but if for any reason you had any alterations on your pipe work, not even close to that fitting, the movement in the pipe could spring a leak, so tell him your not happy with coppression fitting for that reason.
