Why is the a red brick pillar up the side of my end terraced house?

My house is made from stone, there is a brick pillar up the corner (outside) why is it there? there did use to be a house next door I assume it was some kind of support....

Sounds like a buttress, they can be sometimes be added if a wall is on the lean, you find this kind of support on older property's.
