Condensation/mould on bathroom ceiling caused by boxed in RSJ(?)

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

Hi there, I've recently moved house and I've noticed drips of water (and some mould) appearing on our bathroom ceiling. It was happening in the summer but it's worse now. The paint has started to peel too. The drips seem to be concentrated in a boxed-in area that runs the width of the ceiling across one edge. I've been up in the loft and the only thing I can see in the right area appears to be an RSJ that is supporting what's left of the chimney stack. I can't see below the RSJ as the loft has been converted and the floor is in the way. How would I resolve this? Would I need to open the boxed in bit in the bathroom ceiling and put some sort of insulation in there attached to the bottom of the joist and replace the boxing? How would I do this and with what insulation, or what sort of tradesman would I need to call if I mess it up? Thanks for your help in advance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

You need to remove boxing in as it could easily be some pipes rinning alongside Rsj. Definitely needs investigating and boxing will need removing. A handyman should be your best bet.
