Can we convert a conservatory into a room?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

We currently have a conservatory attached to the back of our house - it has a brick base. Are we able to remove the windows and build walls and a new roof, adding a velux window into the roof? We are also thinking of knocking the wall out of the kitchen and extending the room into the conservatory to create one big room. Please could you give me any idea if this could be done. Thank you!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I have just completed this myself You will need Building Control to check the foundations. If the footprint is to remain the same size and the footings are ok you will not need planning permission You will need drawings to show building control of the size of opening into the kitchen calcs for the lintel and B/C can advise on window size to meet energy efficiency calcs and insulation. Your first point would be to get some drawings drawn up, calcs of any load bearing areas (They will also work out what would be required for the roof structure) and then contact B/C then dig a hole down at the side of your footings and allow them to check. The sort answer is yes it is possible. I have recently completed a project extremely similar to what you are wanting to do, turning a conservatory and kitchen into a kitchen dinner with velux Windows new kitchen and bi fold doors

First thing you will need to refer back to the original spec for the foundations on the conservatory and make sure that they are deep enough to withstand the extra weight that you will be producing by adding onto the existing brickwork and putting on a new roof etc.
