New Roof do I need steel Rsj's?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.24 PM
Have recently bought a bungalow. Want to do a dormer attic conversion. The floor joists are not big enough for the load. If I was to replace the whole roof would I still need to install Rsj's or can I avoid this by having the trusses designed? Cheers

Hi, you need someone who can work out the structural loads for the work you want doing. This is very important as you don't want the building collapsing under load.
Your first stop should be the local council planning department and the Building inspectors. I would suggest you need an architect to design this and put the relevant paper work together for submission.
Hope this helps

Having done something similar on our own home the answer would be yes you could remove the existing roof and have pre made attic trusses made and fitted and you wouldnt need RSJs .We have used Velux roof windows everywhere and they work very well . The foundations of the bungalow would have to be inspected first and foremost to see if they are ok to take the extra weight . As in our case everything was good to go and we now have a two storey house instead of a bungalow .
