Plastering & Rendering

Best render mixes

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.24 PM

Hi I want to render a few garden walls and then a garage and then try a side wall on an extention. Keep hearing different things about the mixes. 1) slurry the wall others just wet it and others use Sbr. Which is best ? 2) Scratch coat 4 - 1 cement using plastering sand. But some add lime and some don't. If so how much do you add ? Do you add waterproofer if using lime ? 3) Top coat people again say 4 - 1 but add lime. If so is it then 3 sand 1 lime 1 cement or which mix ? Some say don't use lime just 4 - 1 with plasteriser and waterproofer. Or is it better just to buy ready mix or is this way more expensive ? Garden walls don't have to be perfect hence giving it a go myself. Also best place to buy the beading and is plastic better than metal? Thanks

Put water proofer in with the Scratch coat and Lime in the top coat. 4-1 (4 part sand and 1 part cement with water proofer) is a great mix ratio for the scratch coat For the top coat I would use 5-1 (five part sand and 1 part cement and lime or plasticiser) If you are really unsure about mixes and ratios then I would recommend using bags of premix however as it is a daunting task if you have not rendered before and are not a professional.
