Tiling over newly painted walls

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

We are having a new kitchen fitted and when the old kitchen was ripped out the walls needed plastering. I was told to put pva onto the new plaster (1:5 ratio) to seal them then to put a 'mist coat ' of paint the walls. The walls should then it will be ready to be tiled. I have now been informed by a tile shop that this is completely wrong. What is correct and what do I need to do to rectify the situation???

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi you can use PVA to seal the area where the tiles will be fitted but preffered is an acrylic primer. If the plaster in the tiled area has been mist coated by mistake then simply use a rough sandpaper 80 grit to remove some the paint and create a suitable key to the surface then seal with PVA or acrylic primer. This will be fine, obviously any area to be decorated can be mist coated prior to top coats and you can mist coat just past where the last top Tile will finish so it is painted underneath nicely, hope this helps

Good evening Jimmy, From my knowledge you don't need to mistcoat anything. leave the fresh plaster to be fully dried and then all you have to do is buy the flexible quick drying tile adhesive ideally the ready mixed one and have it tiled. make sure the adhesive is put on properly evenly and have fun tiling . tile it,leave it till next day....grout it,wash it,clean and job done. hope its helpfull

Do not put any paint or pva onto the plaster ,prime the walls with apd tile primer or Sbr,giving the walls a coat of paint will result in tile failure.
