How much can you shave off a wooden door to make it fit?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

We are considering replacing our (very, very old) front door with another used/reclaimed wooden front door. However, our door dimensions are quite narrow (750mm) so it is proving quite tricky to find an existing door to fit the space that we have. If we purchased a door which was slightly too wide, what would be the recommended maximum amount that could be cut/shaved off the sides to make it fit into the existing frame? Would the door frame/architrave itself also need to be replaced or can we use the existing one? Many thanks in advance for any assistance.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Of course what nobody cared to mention is how wide are the stiles on the reclaimed door ? They may well have been reduced already therefore if you further reduce them you may well not have enough timber left to fit a decent mortice/deadlock....

IF YOU CAN FIND A DOOR ROUGHLY TO SIZE YCAN SHAVE THE DOOR TO FIT PLANE OFF ON BOTH SIDES EXTERNAL DOORS SHOULD BE A SOLID WOOD DOOR SO NO PROBLEM IF IT HAS EDGING STRIPS ON DEPENDING ON SIZE DONT SHAVE ALL THE STRIPS OFF IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE DOOR CONSTRUCTION

Hi you can buy at 6'6"x2'6" standard door which would give you 12mm extra so would only mean shaving off 6mm each side. For a external door it should be a solid wood door so there will be no issues taking that amount off the door. I hope this helps you solve your problem.

what you need,is to shave the door off to about a 10 millimetre gap,if you go beyond this and take to much off,you could always fit a draft excuder to close the gap down a bit.hope this helps.
