How to find a joist in a ceiling with foil covered insulation

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.44 PM

Hi, I need to drill some holes into a plasterboard ceiling to install a piece of gym equipment in my home. However, the joist finder seems to think almost the whole ceiling is a joist! I've discovered that the ceiling has the foil-covered insulation installed. Is that what would be confusing the joist finder, and if so, how can I find a joist accurately so I can install the item securely? Thanks!

If you have a carpet in the room above it, pull it back and look for the floor board joints and nails. That will denote the line of the joists. Then measure from the wall to the joist nearest where you need to fix the equipment and there you have it.

I would tap a nailin along the ceiling here and there, you will soon pick up the joist.
