How do I remove one coat of undercoat from wood

Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.55 PM

We have varnished wooden bannisters on our stairs and are changing them to white painted. I have sanded the spindles down but then used one coat of undercoat instead of zinsser bin. How do I remove the undercoat so I can start again and apply zinsser bin as I understand the undercoat won't adhere properly?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi as long as you have sanded the spindles enough to remove the shiny surface of the varnish and provided a suitable key for an undercoat to adhere it wouldn't be a problem, even after each coat of primer you should give it a light rub down 240 grit sandpaper to give you a really nice flat/smooth finish ready for 2 top coatspeed, hope this helps

You won't get the u/c off, just sand back spindles and u/c all. You don't need binsealer unless they are fire damaged.
