widening an exisiting doorway in non-load bearing wall by 4 inches

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.05 PM

Hi - we have a doorway going from our galley kitchen into our dining room. The opening is in line with the kitchen counters on one side, but four inches narrower than the cabinets on the other side. We don't have a door hanging, just the opening. We plan on removing the doorframe and widening the opening by 4 inches so it lines up with the kitchen surfaces on both sides and provides a larger opening between the two rooms. The wall is not load bearing, and there are no light switches or electrical sockets on the side of the opening that we want to widen. How straight forward of a job is this? Do we just need to cut the extra wall off with a plasterboard saw and re plasterboard? or do we need to add in new stud work? any advice would be great. The entire rooms will have new plaster skim on afterwards. Thanks

With respect if you are asking these kinds of questions you really need to employ someone who knows what they are doing. It isn't a 10 minute job but can be done easily by someone who knows. You would need to remove the plasterboard, install new studding and reboard with finishing plasterwork when done. Provided as you say this is not a load bearing wall. Good luck but the old adage here is if you don't know - don't do
