How can I tell if my house can take a 16Amp oven

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.24 PM

Hi. I had a new oven delivered yesterday and the chap said that he could not fit it because I needed a 16 amp fuse and was only setup for 13. I was at work and the guy spoke to my girlfriend. I think that there was a misunderstanding - the oven is on an isolated circuit with a 30Amp circuit breaker. It has a 13 amp socket on the panel with the oven switch, but that should still leave more than enough room. I also wondered if the cable was up to spec, but it is 12mm with the insulation, so sounds like it should be ok. Is it worth getting them to come back - am I missing something? Any help greatly appreciated. thanks.

Hello. There is some information missing on your description but if the circuit that you only supplies your cooker then you need to change your MCB(fuse) to 16 A as advised by the manufacture and connect it on a cooker outlet .If your circuit is powering other points than the maximum load you can connect on the fuse unit is 2.6 KW if you oven is more than that than you would need a dedicated circuit .And either of the jobs needs to be certified but not all notified . Thank you . Klontian Tegko.

Sounds like you need an electrician in to modify your existing cooker circuit and connect it via that. Not a long or complicated job.

Hello Stephen, From what you are describing as long as the original circuit just feeds the the original cooker circuit, it sounds like you should just need to downgrade the circuit breaker to 16amp circuit breaker in order to protect your new oven. But do be aware you will be changing the charecteristcs of the circuit which will require an installation certificate make sure you receive one form whoever you get to complete the job. Hope you might find this of some help. Many thanks AJB ELECTRICS
