Calculate the specification of an Installed RSJ?
Anonymous user 01/03/2024 - 2.54 PM
We have been the victim of a cowboy builder. Luckily we have caught him out in time. He has installed an RSJ however is refusing to provide the calcs to support it.(no pun intended) Is it possible to derive the specification of the RSJ by measuring it after it is installed? ie get back to the specs used to manufacture it? Any help guidance would be much appreciated.

if you give the dimensions of the Steel to a structural Engineer he can tell you whether the steel is compliant for the load it is taking, you would also need to provide a photo of the ends of the steel to see if correct bearing was done by your builder and that the steel ends were rested on concrete pad stones.
Of course the engineer will charge you are fee, but you need calculations for Building Control to sign it off.
Trust this advice helps you.
