Plastering & Rendering

How serious are the cracks in my plaster and who should i get out to look at it?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

I've had a hairline crack in my wallpaper showing through for about 2 years. This appears on the main load baring wall at the back of the house, extends from the top far left of the room downwards at roughly a 45 degree angle towards some large sliding partio doors. I haven't thought too much of it but as time has passed the crack has seemed to move very slowly down the wall at roughly 45 degree angle. I've recently peeled off section of paper to reveal cracks in the plaster a couple of mm wide that have previously been filled with white filler. The House is about 34 years old. I've asked the neighbour who recently moved in and he has said he has found a similar thing in his house upstairs of roughly the same description and thought it wasn't anything to be worried about and to just fill the cracks again if i want to decorate (which i do). I have no DIY knowledge, should this be something I should be concerned about? who should I contact if i am concerned?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

I believe you should be a bit concerned, however the fact that the crack is historic and veering towards the Patio Doors could indicate that the lintol over the aperture is not 'fit for purpose' with the load from the brickwork over and possibly the floor bearing onto the wall the situation will not get better. Further inspection is required, if there are no other cracks in the fabric of the building it would suggest the masonry over and adjacent to the lintol is deflecting. A more substantial lintol may have to be inserted.
