Need to lift ply, but hearth on top of it - help!

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.23 PM

I'm planning on having Amtico laid in my lounge, and fitter has told me that the old ply is not in good enough condition for Amtico (which I expected). I was about to start lifting the existing ply, but see that the hearth for my newly installed gas stove is on top of the ply. I guess I need to cut the ply round the hearth but not sure how best to do this. Any advice, or alternative options?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

If the ply is only 5.5 mm thick you would be able to cut round it using a Stanley knife going over the cuts a few times. If it is thicker I would use a power tool/ multi cutter.

As was stated use either a stanley knife with a concave blade to cut through or a multi tool if it's thicker than 5.5mm, once the installer puts down sp101 ply they need to over screed with a fibre reinforced compound otherwise the joints can "grin" through.
