Electrician v's Electrician - i foot the bill

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

I hope someone can advise me accordingly. Had a kitchen installed by a company, fitter got sockets replaced from old cream to new shiny silver. On completion day i left fitter to finish off the work and when i return home to no power - mcb tripped - seems someone had screwed a face plate through spur live and blown pcb on my boiler. Fitters electrician said i left it all working and safe when i was there to check the work. Boiler engineer had his electrician in who said socket back box is not deep enough for the wires and the box should have rubber grommits. This has caused the pcb to blow. Is not the electician duty bound to ensure that the socket back box is suitable to comply with regs. i have now had boiler sorted out but kitchen fitter is trying to wriggle out saying it was safe when he left...... any advise welcomed THANKS Kevin Cassidy - the annoyance is i hand over my kitchen to a company to do the work and when they give it back to me complete i have a broken boiler and no power...... everyone passing the buck ! Sorry last bit - although he only changed the socket face plates - surely if he has signed them off as safe he should have checked the room in back box and Gromits comply to regulations ?

You are stuck in between two guy's blaming the other. In my own opinion a short circuit live to earth should not cause the PCB to blow it should just knock out the RCD. From your description the electrical work involved only replacing socket fronts but ideally any issues should have been brought to your attention.

Good morning Unfortunately putting a socket screw through a cable does happen sometimes, this could cause the boiler PCB to fail in extreme conditions as they are normally fitted with a quick blow fuse. But the one thing that I would through back at the kitchen fitter is rubber grommets in the back box. In the electrician world this is basic and any electrician who did not use these would fail if inspected by a governing body ( as most electricians are every year ).
