Extractor fan in chimney breast

Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.23 PM

We've recently removed an old aga & replaced with electric oven & hob. There was an extractor fan above which was rubbish so we got rid of it too & now we need to replace it. The house is 3 stories tall. What I need to know is: Is it sufficient to just fit the extractor into the chimney without it being lined (it wasn't before but then with an aga not much cooking gets done on the top) We did use the aga top to cook with before we got rid of it & there was never any issue with smell leaking from chimney. Would it be better if we got a charcoal filter in the new extractor fan as you would for a recirculating filter then the air being sent into the chimney is clean?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Your main issue here is going to be condensation/steam from the cooking. There is no chance whatsoever the water vapour will clear one floor let alone three so you could possibly suffer damp issues as the water vapour comes back down.

Hi i would definitely agree with Kevin, the extractor wont work efficiently in that kind of setup & im not sure it would meet building reg's either. Assuming that the chimney is on an outside wall, you would be better to drill a hole from outside into the chimney breast & run ducting to the extractor, as even if you fit charcoal filters it needs to really return the air back into the kitchen recycled & not into the chimney void where it wont go anywhere. Hope this helps
