Should rubble be left under a newly installed suspended wooden floor?
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.23 PM
I am having a kitchen extension/conservatory installed. The suspended floor is being raised approx 18" from ground level. The floor has been covered with black PVC and then back=filled with rubble. In some places the rubble comes close to the joists. Friends and family have advised me to get rid of the rubble as it will attract problems with vermin, plants and damp. My builder has told me it won't. Please can someone advise on whether to leave it in or take it out. Thanks.

You need to check if the rubble is above the line of the DPC. The DPC is installed at the time when the house was built to stop any damp rising up. You can normally see it between the bricks and it is mostly black. If it's above this you will have to have it removed. Also make sure you have some air bricks installed under the floor.
