Extension wall - with concrete block and new bricks instead of rendering work.

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.05 PM

As a part of the contract for the new extension our builder was meant to do double quote rendering and 2 quote water proof paint for the extension wall, however he has done concrete wall + insulation + new brick wall. When i asked him he said because he has used new brick wall we do not require rendering or anything else? The actual quote for the wall (not for the whole contract) with the rendering was £17,000 (please note extenstion is 6 mtr ground floor and 3 mtr single storey only one room) Did he change the wall to do it cheaper way or is this how the modern extensions are done? Which one is safer? or other way which one is cheaper? so when i talk to him i am aware?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

a new brick wall is cheaper than a new wall with 2 coat rendering + 2 coat waterproofing especially if he is a bricklayer himself, but usually in all cases all walls of an extension should be built in the same materials as the house.

The new extension is meant to match the existing materials if it has been put in as a planning application, if it was down as render it would of been a little more expensive maybe he had not quoted it correctly and used brick for pricing so he could of become unstuck with expenses and had to build in in brick.
