Are my light switches safe
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.23 PM
My electrics are over 30 years old & there is no casing behind any of the switches. The switches are brass. Are they safe to use

Just to add to the other comments, even if you can see an earth cable in the switch line this does not necessarily mean its a working earth for this you will need to confirm using the appropriate test meter so a job for an electrician.

Well it depends if they have the correct earthing arrangement to protect you .if a live cable breaks and makes contact with the brass switch if there is an earth it should disconnect the power to the switch under fault current if there is now earth your at risk of electric shock

Hi Lisa,
Just as K G says, you must have an earth to be able to have metal switches. If you are unsure as to whether you have an earth connected to your switch, get in touch with a local electrician and ask them to check. Better safe than sorry!
