Changing a 3 panel over 3 door to a one over 3 panel door
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.43 PM
Hi I'm finding it impossible to get a 1930s style one over 3 panel door to replace an odd sized WC door without it costing the earth. I've seen a 3 over 3 panel door online which has similar dimensions, but how easy is it/is it possible to make the 3 panels at the top to just one panel? And if so how would I do this? Thanks
Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

In theory it should be quite simple, just cut out the "Mullions" or "Muntins"(the 2 vertical timbers that section the panel into 3). They will be morticed & tenanted in so you would have to cut them in 2 places & wiggle them out. You would then have to fill the morticed holes, fit a new panel in(either ply or MDF) then bead round with some quadrant to keep it in place. Some would argue that this could affect the structural integrity of the door but I think it would be fine.
