Kitchen Fitting

kitchen fitter or Jobs worth?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.33 PM

I hired a kitchen fitter and was quoted £1910 including plastering and electrics. I have paid him £300 for the plastering and £250 for the electrics and now owe him £1360. The problem is he said it would take 3-4 days to fit the kitchen once it arrived ( he now denies saying this) and he would get cracking asap. The 1st day he just checked what had arrived and left, 2nd day unpacked it all and left, 3rd day put up 2 wall units and cut 2 work tops and left, 4th day never turned up. I called him and he promised it would be done for lunch time today ( day 9) at the latest and when i questioned why he never works longer than 3 hours he said he has lots of other jobs to do and has to make sure the lads he has on other jobs are ok. 5th day stayed about 3 hours and left. He called this morning saying he would be an hour as he has a flat tyre but he isnt here yet at 12pm and i still have wires hanging out the walls, no side panels, plinths, up stands, boxed in pipes, under unit lighting, doors on some units, filler panels, plug sockets, light switches, ceiling light or cornices. I cant paint or tile until he has done his jobs and i am so frustrated as it looks like its not going to be finished this week now either. When i called him and complained last week he was very angry and intimidating and i am very uneasy about complaining again and dont know what to do. I dont think he should be paid the full amount either but i dont have it in writing what time scale he gave me. What can i do?

Oh dear, seems like you have employed the services of one of 'trades-people' who like to stack up the work and never finish anything! A good kitchen fitter would be 'on-site' as much as possible to get the job done, not flitting around looking after his children, sorry lads! Best you don't give him any more money or you won't see him at all, let him know that unless he gets his act together your off to find a person who can stick to their word. Long and short is it's going to cost you as finding people to sort out others mess is a job in itself. Did you ask him for references etc before allowing him to tie his horse to your fence?....

I am sorry to hear that you have got an irresponsible person dealing with your kitchen. As in previous comment mentioned he should have stayed on site for as much time as possible in order to finish the job. Lets be honest we all have those days when issues come up and have to leave job early but this cannot repeat every day. My suggestion for you is to write him a message stating that you need absolute deadline for this job. If he fails to meet that date tell him that you will hire other builders and chargeback him for their work. This is standard procesure in the industry and in my opinion works best. Few other points i should point: Good builders will always find ways to resolve any issue honest and without any tensions. If you ever get any builder intimidating you for whatever reason alarms should be ringing that this is not right person to deal with.
