Ask a questionChimney & Fireplace
Unused fireplace giving off a strong and pungent smell
Anonymous user 28/02/2024 - 3.23 PM
Our mid terraced house has a multi fuel burner (installed December 2014). The feature fireplace is giving off a very strong pungent ash smell and it appears the bricks are crumbling in places. What could be causing the issue/smell and how can this be fixed? The fireplace has not been used in almost 12 months and we regularly run a dehumidifier to eradicate any damp. Thank you for your help.

Check to see if the chimney pot/flue terminal have not been removed and capped off, as this will cause unpleasant odours within the chimney due to no or very little air movement and possibly causing damp too!
