Bathroom Fitting

Vastly Overpriced & Poor Workmanship

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.43 PM

Hi all, My mother, god bless her, entered into an agreement with a large, nationwide bathroom store who charged her in excess of £11,000 for materials and labour for the refitting of a bathroom approximately 4ft by 15ft. As you can imagine from a room of this size, with materials costing only approximately ~£4,000 out of the total, I am worried that the company in question have grossly overcharged her on this project. I may never have become aware of this had the project gone to plan. Unfortunately, the project was besieged by poor management and workmanship and by this point I am considering all options. Firstly, what should have taken no longer than two weeks has taken in excess of six and there still remain unfinished parts of the project left to complete. In that time, both the project manager and the contractor doing the work, have both been on holidays resulting in either poor or alternatively a complete absence of communication. Secondly, the quality of the work itself is appalling. Tiles have not been fitted evenly, sealer around the bath is incomplete, a sink/unit has been installed with a half an inch gap on either side between the walls with a thick layer of dust that you cannot reach if you wanted to clean, an entire wall has not been plastered or tiled, a cabinet has not yet been fitted. All this, on top of the extortionate price, has obviously left my mother incredibly upset and I am now prepared to take action on her behalf against this shambles of a company. They have recently been round and offered to fix some of the outstanding issues but quite frankly, I am: a) not able to trust them to do any of the work correctly given how poorly their workmanship has been until now. b) desperate to try and find a means of getting my mother some financial compensation out of this when she was grossly over charged for the work in the first place, irrespective of how badly things were subsequently bodged up. Could anyone possibly advise on next steps and what I should do? Many thanks, Oliver Crystal Palace, Lambeth

Hi, I am sorry to here about your mother's bad experience, firstly has your mother already paid for the work?, secondly you need to read through the contract your mother signed with the company (if there is one), they maybe in breach of contract if the work is not completed in the time scale agreed. If the work has not been completed to a satisfactory standard you must not pay for it until it has been rectified, but you must give them opportunity to rectify the work, if you intend to take them to court. If you need any further advice please feel free to email me. I hope this helps.

Hi Oliver. Sorry to hear about the problems your having. Any work after 1st October 2015 is covered by the Consumer Rights Act. The work should be carried out in a reasonable time, and to a good standard. If you are not satisfied with the response from the company involved I would first talk to Citizens Advice who will advise you on the correct procedure to take. You could also report them to your local Trading Standards office if the matter is not resolved. Good luck.
