Kitchen Fitting

Is it possible to replace kitchen worktops without damaging the units?

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.04 PM

Hi, I bought my flat with a fitted IKEA kitchen. The previous owner had bought kitchen worktops made of chipboard which quickly got water damaged and it upsets me to look at it. I would like to get a fitter in to replace the worktops with something of higher quality and leave the the rest of the kitchen alone. They appear to have been screwed in not glued so theoretically it should be easy to take them off, but I am a bit nervous about the units getting damaged and having to replace the whole kitchen. How likely is this? Also, will I need to buy a new sink or can we just fit the new worktop over it? Should I buy Ikea worktops to ensure the sizes are all compatible? And lastly, how many days should I expect it to take. There is one worktop over the sink, and another opposite.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hello you can put the old sink in place as and kitchen fitter would say the same and the unit's will be ok as long as you cover them with Polly wrap to stop from scratching also would advise you to check with IKEA as they should explain to you what to do if any more problems I would be happy to help.

Hi there If the carpenter will be carefull with taking it out will be all right. The only problem with this kind of job is if you have splash back(tiles between work top and cabinets) If not carefully take off all silicone and grout around edge of the work top those can be damaged and involve more work. With care and take time will be ok. This job should take no more than 1 day for someone knowing what is doing. You can't put one on top of other.... Also check the tickness .3.8 cm The ikea worktop I think is around 62 cm and your one sure is 60cm... Good luck...
