Converting pitched roof to flat roof with Roof lantern

Hi - we are thinking of buying a property, which has a small extension at the back with a pitched roof. To get more light into this room, we would like to change it to add a roof lantern, which I presume would require us to change to a flat roof also. We won't be raising the overall height. I would like to understand how easy this would be to do. Thanks

Have you thought about putting a sun tunnel in, or a large velux window or maybe 2 small velux which will let you in just as much light as the lantern. It will also cost you less? Hope this helps. Niki Platt ..Platts Roofing

Why not fit velux style windows to the already existing pitched roof? this would be a cheaper alternative, whilst still letting natural light into the room. Also, you would be able to open these allowing ventilation. I hope this has been helpful. Carl Carltan building & Roofing

Keep the cost down.!! Keep the roof pitched and add 1 large or 2 small velux windows, you’ll be surprised how much natural daylight they actually draw inside.! Hope this helps. Ray; RCD roofing solutions

Keep the costs down and maybe install a velux window or 2. This will let much more light in and will save the costs of changing to flat roof, if its the only reason for you to want to change to a flat roof being lighting, I’d 100% recommend fitting velux, LJ Sissons Roofing

Easy, but you need building control as you will need to comply with Approved Documents, A, C & L - (structure, condensation, insulation). You need to budget wisely on roof lantern - size and specifications can be costly.

Hi there is no need to drop to a flat roof if its just for light i would look in to a velux or a sun tunnel i have fitted many and all give good light

It would save you atleast 60 percent by installing a couple of small velux windows. Its not as big of a job as you would think.

Hi Depending on the pitch of the roof you should be able to install velux strait onto the existing pitched roof should keep costs down would recommend putting a few in evenly spaced to spread the light through the room.

Hi Anna, Totally agree with the others. Install a velux window or sun tunnel. You would benefit more from a velux over a sun tunnel and can get velux windows in all different sizes and ways of opening with the choice of fitted blinds in all different colours ect. Saving money and a fair bit of work re constructing the roof.
