Gas Works

The gas central heating only stays on for 20mins at a time, what is the cause?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

Hi the central heating in my flat comes on, the boiler heats up etc. but just stays on for 20 mins a time...then randomly switches itself on but not at the scheduled times. For example, the heating is programmed to come on at 7am and switch off at 11.30am. When the heating switches on at 7 am the radiators stay on for 20 mins and go cold again, then the heating will randomly switch itself on at 10am , stay on for 20mins and switch off again. I was advised last year that it is due to the temperature in my flat being too hot (the thermostat displays that my flat is 23 degrees) so the heating won't stay on for 4.5 hours consistently because the thermostat is incorrectly mounted to the wall in the kitchen close to a radiator. The thermostat is now brand new and wireless and no where near a radiator. The current wireless thermostat displays that my flat is 23 degrees) I have had the timer/programmer checked and advised it is not faulty, i have had a brand new wireless thermostat fitted, and it is no where near a radiator, but still the heating behaves this way. Could it be that the new thermostat is faulty and needs replaced to fix this issue, or is the timer faulty and needing replaced? Or could the heating just be like this naturally and radiators are supposed to stay on for just 20-25mins? Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

If your stat is set at 23 and it reads 23 then the heating should be switched off until the temp drops to say 21/22 then the heating should fire up again. if you are feeling cold at this temperature then try turning up the setting on the stat say to 25 and see how you get on.

A mechanical room thermostat is accurate to +/- 4 degrees if its a digital they tend to be more accurate.

Get an electrition/ boiler technition to link out the thermostat but keep the time clock connected then your heating will stay on for the required timescale stated Thermostats and digital thermostats are nothing but a headache The old pin out and pin in time clocks are the best and most accurate way to control your heating
