Carpets, Lino & Flooring

I recently had a carpet professionally measured and fitted. The stairs is open on one side with banisters. He just folded it and left it on this edge, no binding or staples. Is this acceptable? He said to bind it would cost me more and he would have to lift it. He didn't mention any of this when he gave a quote and measured it.
The conventional practice of installing carpet on an open-sided staircase is to fold the edge of the carpet which lays on the open side. This is to prevent fraying and to some degree leave a cleaner finish. However, this style of installation may not be suitable for a myriad of reasons, and as such a professional carpet fitter should always inform a client as to all of the available options (of which there are many) when concerned with the finish of the floor covering. The overarching principle, when undertaking a job, is to ensure customer satisfaction. If this is not achieved then i would not consider the carpet fitter/salesman deserving of recommendation.

Doesn't sound like a professional finish to me. Id phone the shop up where you purchased the carpet from to see if it can be resolved.
