Can I temporarily place Indian Sandstone paving slabs on only a 50mm sand screed?

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

I'm organising a small party in our garden, which has taken too long to clear from brambles etc, and the hard clay soil makes it very time-consuming to dig by hand tools. Can I simply lay a tarp on the even soil and add a 50mm sharp sand screed, and place the flags on top of the sand without a cement mix? I wouldn't even point the flags as I want to do the job properly in the near future. I'd just like to have a somewhat even surface for the table and chairs. Can the flags get damaged from this type of use? They'd have max 6-8 people standing in the area at the same time. It might be a dumb question, sorry! If you present a reason which makes this a dumb idea, I will try to do the job properly (and get help to do it). Cheers!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Not recommended, screeding out to make this flat enough to lay indian stone is not easy ,you could damage flags ,thats not counting on what rain could do to a sub base ,making flags wobbly and unsafe

Providing your base is well packed down and nice and level so that there will be no big hollow spaces bellow slabs then you will be OK (temporary) ,but don't get tempted to leave it that way 😉
