Building a wall with Sandstone walling
Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.42 PM
Hi, I'm about to build a retaining wall 0.4m high in my garden using light coloured sandstone walling blocks. I've already laid some sandstone slabs without washing backs with pva and encountered problems (lesson learnt). I want to make sure I get the walling right 1st time. What is the best way to go about this and what mix should I use? Do the walling blocks need prepped in any way to avoid leaching etc?... Any help is much appreciated. Many thanks Ryan

Using a ratio of 5 to 2 sharpe sand to hydraulic lime will be sufficient for building and pointing the wall with out any issues

Sandstone is quite porous;therefore try and minimilise the mortar that touches the face of the stone.I would advice a mix of 4 soft sand,2 grit sand,1 hydrated lime and 1 cement. The sand ratio can vary depending on the grit content. You may have to increase the gritted sand ratio. The best finnish is to wire brush, then soft brush.Timming is key-don't brush when the mortar is too wet.Best to leave to professional people if you want a professional job.
