Client paid, now suggesting damage to carpet...

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.04 PM

We recently completed a job for a client that we have worked with before. During the second job the client consistently would text around midnight really inflammatory and accusatory texts about things that were outstanding on the job. Regardless of how confrontational the text were, they were always resolved the next day and the standard was high. I bit my tongue a lot, and was incredibly polite the entire time and on completing they were really happy with the result (bar haggling me down on the invoice for a few of the materials even though they had been installed in their property in good faith and in full consultation with the client). They paid both invoices in full. They are now contacting me daily accusing me and my staff of causing a stain on their hallway carpet. We 100% know that nothing was spilt while we were there and if it was, I am professional and proud enough to admit it and deal with it there and then. Regardless of it not being our fault, we have been recommending them carpet cleaning products to help them to resolve the issue (they have a cat, I am pretty sure he might be the culprit to be honest!). They are now getting even more aggressive and accusatory and I really feel as if they are talking to me as if they own me. Anyway, long story short, they have paid up and can not prove that the stain was caused by us. Are we liable to fix it?

I would suggest offering a courtesy cleaning by a professional carpet cleaner and also a recorded report subsequently provided by the cleaning company/person about the possible damage. In the future for the photos to be taken by yourself before, during and after installation of new flooring as evidence.

Over the years we have had a few clients like this. Unfortunately if they were to take it further prove is not necessarily on them to show the carpet was damaged by you. I would suggest offering them a goodwill (without prejudice) carpet cleaning by someone like Servicemaster. Will likely cost you about £75 - 100 but shows your intent to deal with problem.
