Tiling

ledgestone tiles in the living room

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.04 PM

I want to install splitface mosaic ledgestone tiles on the feature wall (2.40m x 6.40m) in my living room. I'm concerned about the tiles weight which is about 30kg/sq.m, wall has old plaster on it which from what I read can hold up to 20kg/sq.m. including adhesive. What my options are? Was thinking about tile backer board, apparently they can carry out up to 50kg. Is it a good idea? If so what's the best way to fix it to the wall and what primer/adhesive can I use on them boards. Sorry for that many questions just never done something like that before and couldn't find enough info on the internet so I thought I ask professionals. Any advice will be much appreciated!

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Yes, quite right, a cement board such as hardie backerboard is your best option. If it's a stud wall, find studs and screw to these, if not drill, raw plug and screw

My friend did an entire wall of his in his kitchen, looked great. They only no no for me would be tiling onto a painted wall. If it has paint then scratch it up a bit and use a decent primer (not PVA) which you can get from most tile shops. Ardex P51 primer is what i use daily and Mapei Proflex adhesive (cheap in Tile Giant atm. Splitface also looks great when it's had a colour intensifier applied to it. Hope this helps. Cheers, Jel
