Plastering & Rendering

Damaged plaster ceiling rose, want to hang new light but nothing to screw into

Anonymous user 23/02/2024 - 3.04 PM

I removed a light fitting from a plaster ceiling rose that the previous owner had screwed in using anchors directly supported by the crumbling plaster above. When I removed the screws to take down the fitting, most of the remaining crumbling plaster fell out. There's now nothing to support the new light fitting and I have a 7 cm hole in the centre of the ceiling rose that goes up about 8 cm to the floor joists above. What can I do to sort this out so that I can hang a new light? I'd like to keep the rose if possible.

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Hi my names Dave Gould from Rakes&ladders. To make good connection of your light fitting if you ain't got one you can make a hole big enough to put a piece of two by one battens up. Once batten is inside screw through ceiling into batten to keep it fixed. Now screw you light fixing back to this batten. The batten will give you more weight bearing than normal plugs if your plastering is crumbling.

Have to get the floorboards up above it and insert & fix a piece of wood above the hole
