Oak veneer doors - What fittings should I use

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hi, I've recently bought some oak veneer doors (27.5kg) and would like some advice on selecting door furniture. I have already acquired hinges from screwfix; Eclipse Ball Bearing Hinges 76 x 51 x 2mm in a Satin Chrome finish. They are a steel construction and I'll be using 3 hinges per door - Would these be OK? Does the OAK really react with certain metals? The thing that I am most unsure about is the handles & latches. Is there a certain type of metal I should or should not use? The handles I'd like are a satin finish (not sure on the type of metal) on a rose lever. Can anybody recommend a good place to purchase these from? I have 11 doors and a budget of about £150 for handles, latches and 3 thumb locks. I appreciate the help, thanks

I have hung loads of oak veneer doors with all types of hinges and i dont see any evidence of any reacting. The veneer doors at my home are swung with polished chrome and they just need dusting off ever so often. 3x 75mm hinges should be plenty if they are 35mm (thick) non fire doors. 45mm doors will need 3x 100mm hinges. Howdens or Magnets are selling certain door packs of handles/latch and hinges for £10 + vat but you'll need a trade account. Not worth buying cheap off the shelf handles for nice doors though as you'll only regret it.

Oak will react if it is in contact with a ferrous metal ( iron or mild steel ) as long as the ironmongery you choose is stainless steel or nickel or chrome plated it will be fine.
