Which masonary wall fixtures for shelving for a record collection?

Anonymous user 09/03/2024 - 2.41 PM

Hi all, Slightly daft question, I suppose, but I think I'm probably in safe place to ask it(!). I've got a growing record collection, and I'm trying to take some of the weight off of the floor (I'm intensely paranoid about the joists giving way). The idea is to put up some shelving units to hold 160 records per shelf (which means a load weight of about 25kg), but obviously the weight is going to lever out by 12 inches, so isn't a simple load weight. What type of fixtures do I need to use? Will heavy duty Rawlplugs work? Or do I need something more robust and industrial? Like the expanding-metal plugs? Also, if I put six shelves into one wall section, will that have any noticeable effect / impact on the wall itself (given that would be a total of 150kg against a single strip of wall)? Thanks in advance,

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

Depending on your choice of shelving unit you could use an 8mm anchor bolt with a minimum 50mm sleeve! You may also consider a robust style of shelf, with the weight being spread over width of shelf a sturdy bracket to avoid the shelf bending should be taken into account

Using a suitable shelving system you'll find no need for any excessive anchor bolts, your not hanging heavy industrial machinery on the wall they are only records after all! Just to give a little perspective, think of a standard pull up bar that easily takes the weight of a 100 kg grown man, held up with nothing but standard screws and plugs. I would imagine because of the 12" depth needed of the shelves, one of those set ups with long vertical metal strips with holes in for the shelf brackets, allowing for adjustable shelf heights would work well... I hope you get the idea of what I'm talking about, haha... Hope this helps.
