to replace chipboard flooring will we need to take out the kitchen units?

We had a flood from our washing machine in june which flooded all our kitchen and half the lounge and have only now got the funds to replace it..we thought we had dried it out enough to lay the old flooring back down, but have now found out 5 month later after lifting laminate the chipboard underneath has rotted and got black mold all over it.will we have to remove kitchen units to replace the flooring? And will we have to replace polystyrene insulation under chip board? Can we do this ourselves or is this a major job that a builder will have to do?

Hi lucyp88 You can minimise the disruption to your kitchen by replacing the flooring under each unit one at a time. Assuming that the units are secured to each other and the wall, screw the black plastic legs in on one unit and take the floor out. Slide the new floor in and unscrew the legs until they are firmly down. This is fiddly but beats removing the whole kitchen. The polystyrene should be ok. All the best. Paul Sharpington

Hi Lucy, It is possibly something you could do yourself, depends really what direction the chipboard flooring is laying. Probably quicker and easier to take the units out though especially if they are the older type with-out adjustable legs...

Lucy, Insulation should be fine. The first suggestion, doing the floor boards under each cabinet individually would have been my advise. Floor boards are quite easy to put down if you have some carpentry skills. Needs to screwed down well to avoid movement and creeks. Get a quote first and then see whether it's worth the stress and time.
