Plastering & Rendering

Artex (popcorn) ceiling

Anonymous user 15/03/2024 - 2.32 PM

We have just bought a 1960's home that has artex ceilings throughout (the 'popcorn' style). Obviously we want to modernise so I was hoping to get some advice on the best and cheapest solution. Currently I am assuming that I can plasterboard straight over the top and then get the ceilings skimmed? Or can the existing ceiling be smoothed by plastering straight onto them?

Are you a tradesperson and able to answer this question?

The ceiling can be plastered straight on to the popcorn.

Once the ceiling has been sealed with unibond yes you can skim straight over the ceiling .

Be aware that the artex may contain asbestos.
